24 hours before I arrived here I studied my book of flights to realise I had a surprise two nights in Santiago…not a connecting flight…so surprise number one, I get to spend time in Santiago, which is cool but I need to sort out a bed. Where does one stay for a few nights in Santiago?
Bellavista, the name sounds good, there are enough hostels and the one blog I read said it would be a good idea. That’s where I ended up after booking it on hostel world, landed at the airport after an 11-hour flight and a time change of 17 hours. 😐
That combination equals groundhog day the 29th of January was effectively about 36 hours long so by the time I got to the hostel after making friends with a Welsh girls at the luggage belt, her face showed what I felt, tired, bored of waiting and not in the mood to go on. We paired up after a short chat and as she had not booked anything, she came to the same hostel as me.
We made firm friends with a Brazilian girl and a another English girl and spend the evening and next few days together. First night in Santiago, first night in south america we witnessed a robbery…a lady waiting for a bus at 11pm had her bag dragged away from her and was screaming. This was all in the distance, maybe 200 meters down the road, I didn’t realise what I was witnessing and thought it was a group of teenagers jesting. The Brazilian called it….she’s being robbed.
That put the heebee jeebees in me…now I had to face Rio by myself and that is supposed to b worse. Why am I doing this again?
